What is the best mothod for cutting ceramic tile (for fine art use)?
I am creating a mosaic and need ceramic tiles that are approx. 1/4″ x 1/4″ to 1″ x 1″. Doing this on the cheap, so power tools are out of the question. I love the idea of using abstract shapes from broken tiles and tips for that process are welcome as well. Any ideas? Thank you for your contributions!
If you wang regular rectangle tiles, I suggest you order some tiles form your local dealer, it should be few dollors per pound. very cheap resources.
If you dont need regular tiles, just use a hammer to knock them down. of course you need wear some protections for both your hand and eyes.

Smalti (or smalto) is the type of opaque glass used in classic Byzantine mosaics. It is also sometimes called Venetian Enameled Glass or Byzantine Glass. Smalti spans the spectrum, from intense colors to pastels and earth-tones. As each piece is cut by hand, the size of each tesserae varies, but they are approximately 1/4 in. thick by 3/4 in. long.
